Problem Analysis and Proposed Solution

The Challenge

The Health-AI project addresses the limited accessibility and availability of health data within the Dutch health sector, which impedes the development and validation of AI applications in health. This sector faces complex issues such as administrative inefficiencies, workforce retention concerns, health disparities, and suboptimal electronic data exchange.

The "Integraal Zorgakkoord" (IZA) of 2022 highlighted these challenges, projecting a need for 25% of the workforce to be employed in the health sector by 2040 and a threefold increase in health costs by 2060 if left unaddressed.

The Opportunity

Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds the potential to mitigate these challenges by optimizing resource utilization, encouraging patient involvement, facilitating timely interventions, and streamlining administrative tasks. However, the effectiveness of AI in health relies on efficient access to patient data, which poses privacy concerns.

Our Solution: Federated AI Development and Validation

The Health-AI project proposes a transformative solution through federated AI development and validation, establishing a secure ecosystem for collaboration among stakeholders. It focuses on data provision, federated infrastructure, AI algorithm development, privacy preservation, use cases, and an open-source ethos.

The goal is to revolutionize data accessibility for cost-effective, efficient, and equitable health delivery, benefiting both individuals and the Netherlands' economic well-being.

Proof of Concept Success

In the proof-of-concept phase, a functional federated data infrastructure was demonstrated, allowing AI algorithm training without data sharing. Further development is crucial, and AIC4NL's financial contribution was sought to bridge the knowledge-translation gap, enabling practical implementation and validation.

Beyond Healthcare

Federated AI development and validation from sensitive data is of interest to other sectors including logistics, intelligence, crime prevention, financial services, and the energy sector.
